Wyspa Spichrzów (Granary Island) — what to know
Wyspa Spichrzów sits between two arms of the Motława river, directly opposite the Main Town. It is the fastest-changing part of central Gdańsk: a decade ago this was a field of ruined granaries, today it is new residential quarters, hotels and waterfront restaurants.
Our apartments are in the southern part of the island, around Jaglana, Chmielna and Toruńska streets — in buildings from recent years, with lifts and well-insulated windows, overlooking the water or a quiet courtyard. You will find both cosy apartments for two and two-bedroom units for a larger family. Our office is on Toruńska as well — if anything were missing on site, we are a step away.
How to walk to the Old Town. To reach the Main Town you walk along Chmielna street to the northern tip of the island and cross the Green Bridge or the Stągiewny Bridge — Długi Targ (the Long Market) is about a 10-minute walk, passing new architecture and the remains of the old granaries on the way. The Żuraw crane is only slightly further. And closer than the Old Town are the island's own restaurants and embankments: the ones on the Nowa Motława are right at your doorstep.
Other distances: Forum Gdańsk with its cinema and shopping mall — about 20 minutes on foot. Gdańsk Główny railway station — 25 minutes on foot or a dozen or so minutes by public transport from Podwale Przedmiejskie. The airport — about 13 kilometres, usually 25 minutes by taxi.
Who this area suits. First-time visitors to Gdańsk: the Old Town is within walking distance, and you sleep in a new building. Couples and families who want to walk out to dinner by the water in the evening and stroll back home. Guests with a dog — the boulevards along the Nowa Motława are good for a walk at any hour.
Who it suits less. Those looking for "old Gdańsk" — this part is modern: glass and reclaimed brick, not arcaded townhouses. And those who want a bakery and greengrocer downstairs — everyday infrastructure is still catching up with the new buildings, so bigger shopping means a short walk.
Parking. Most apartments come with a parking space — if a given apartment has one, you will find that information stated directly in its listing.
In the evening. Despite the waterfront restaurants, summers here are quiet — this is a residential area, not a party district, and evenings on the Nowa Motława are calm.
A bit of context. For centuries the island was Gdańsk's warehouse — hundreds of granaries stored grain floated down the Vistula, and at night the island was locked and guard dogs were released. In 1945 almost all of it burned down, and for decades the area stood empty. Rebuilding began in earnest after 2015 — hence the contrast: one of the oldest addresses in the city, and the newest buildings in the centre.
