What to do in Gdańsk when it rains: 15 indoor attractions

Rain in Gdańsk is no reason to stay in the apartment. Within a ten-minute walk of Długi Targ you have five museums, each with its own free-admission day, a museum of illusions on Długie Ogrody and a tower with a view over the whole Main Town. Below are fifteen indoor places with addresses, opening hours and ticket prices, and at the end a plan by day of the week, so you know where you get in for free on a given day.

Hours and prices checked on the venues’ websites on 23 September 2026. Have a look at the museum’s website before you go, because on public holidays they sometimes change.

Museums in the centre: five addresses, three free days a week

1. Amber Museum in the Great Mill (Wielkie Młyny 16). One of the largest amber collections in the world, with inclusions 40 million years old, inside a Teutonic mill from around 1350, the largest in medieval Europe. Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, on Monday 12:00 to 18:00 with free admission. Standard ticket 37 zł, reduced 26 zł, family 99 zł. About 5 minutes from Długi Targ.

2. Main Town Hall and Artus Court (Długa 46/47 and Długi Targ 43/44). Two branches of the Museum of Gdańsk standing next to each other. In the Town Hall the Red Room with its painted ceiling, in Artus Court the great Renaissance tiled stove. Hours as at the Amber Museum, Monday 12:00 to 18:00 free of charge. Separate ticket for each: 26 zł standard, 19 zł reduced, 70 zł family.

3. Uphagen House (Długa 12). An 18th-century merchant’s house with reconstructed interiors. Hours and prices as above, Monday free of charge.

4. National Maritime Museum: Maritime Culture Centre (Ołowianka 9-13), the Crane (Szeroka 67/68) and the ship Sołdek. Wednesday is the free-admission day for permanent exhibitions, and on that day the sites are open from 13:00 to 17:00. On the other days, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00, the Crane from 9:00. Closed on Monday. Ticket 26 zł standard, 19 zł reduced. Note: the interactive hall in the Maritime Culture Centre, the part children like most, is closed for modernisation until 18 October 2026. You reach Ołowianka by footbridge from Długie Pobrzeże in about 5 minutes.

5. National Museum in Gdańsk (Toruńska 1). A former Franciscan monastery with Gdańsk and Flemish painting. Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30, free admission on Tuesday. Ticket 25 zł standard, 20 zł reduced. Important: Hans Memling’s “Last Judgement” is being conserved and you will not see it before the end of 2026. If you are coming specifically for Memling, wait until next season. The museum stands next to our apartments on Toruńska, about 25 minutes on foot from Długi Targ or a few tram stops.

Two big museums in the Young Town: the war and Solidarity

6. Museum of the Second World War (pl. Władysława Bartoszewskiego 1). The main exhibition is underground and takes half a day without rushing. Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, on Tuesday 10:00 to 16:00 and on that day admission is free. Closed on Monday. Standard ticket 33 zł, reduced 23 zł, family 72 zł for up to five people, children under 7 free. The audio guide in 14 languages costs 12 zł and the museum recommends it for individual visits. The subject is heavy; with younger children Hevelianum works better. About 20 minutes on foot from Długi Targ.

7. European Solidarity Centre (plac Solidarności 1). The story of August 1980 and martial law, plus a library and a winter garden where you can simply sit for a while. From October to April: Monday and Wednesday to Friday 10:00 to 17:00, Saturday and Sunday 10:00 to 18:00. On Tuesday the exhibition is closed. Standard ticket 40 zł, reduced 35 zł, family 100 zł (2+1) or 115 zł (2+2 or 2+3), children under 7 free. Plan it together with the Museum of the Second World War, as they are about 5 minutes apart, but remember Tuesday: on that day one is free and the other is closed.

Indoors with children: science, illusions and a play centre

8. Hevelianum (Gradowa 6). A science centre in a former fort on Gradowa Hill, with interactive exhibitions on energy, puzzles and journeys, where everything may be touched. Interactive exhibitions package: standard ticket 30 zł, reduced 25 zł, family 80 zł, children under 2 free. Entries are sold for specific time slots, so buy your ticket in advance at bilety.hevelianum.pl and check the hours for your day there. From Długi Targ about 25 minutes on foot uphill, or by tram to the Hucisko stop and a few minutes further.

9. DeJa Vu Museum of Illusions (Długie Ogrody 18). An Ames room, a vortex tunnel, holograms and several dozen installations made for photos. Daily 10:00 to 20:00, tickets on the spot without booking. Adults 49 zł, pupils and students 42 zł, children under 3 free, visitors under 14 enter with an adult. About 10 minutes from Długi Targ, and from the apartments on Długie Ogrody literally a few steps.

10. Loopy’s World (al. Grunwaldzka 229, Wrzeszcz). A large play centre with two zones for toddlers from one to three years and a main zone with slides. Monday to Thursday and Sunday 10:00 to 20:00, Friday and Saturday until 21:00. The accompanying adult enters free; the children’s price list is at loopys.pl. It is the only place on this list outside the centre: about 20 minutes by tram from Brama Wyżynna.

Tower, church, escape room and an evening in town

11. St Mary’s Basilica (Podkramarska 5). Considered the largest brick church in the world. Every day at 11:57 the figures of the astronomical clock perform, free of charge. The interior is open on weekdays 8:30 to 17:30, on Sundays 11:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:30. The tower is open daily 10:00 to 18:00, also in winter, ticket 20 zł standard and 10 zł reduced. They close it only during a storm; ordinary rain is no obstacle.

12. Escape room and bowling. Zorkout at Spichrzowa 28 (Granary Island), rooms from 110 to 230 zł per group. MK Bowling in the Manhattan shopping centre in Wrzeszcz, from 59 to 149 zł per lane per hour. At weekends book in advance.

13. Evening: Baltic Philharmonic and the Shakespeare Theatre. The Philharmonic at Ołowianka 1, a few minutes from the Crane; the theatre at Bogusławskiego 1, just behind Brama Wyżynna. Check the programme and prices for the evening at filharmonia.gda.pl and teatrszekspirowski.pl.

14. Cinema. Helios in Forum Gdańsk by Gdańsk Główny station, about 10 minutes from Długi Targ.

15. Outside Gdańsk, by SKM train. Experyment Science Centre in Gdynia (al. Zwycięstwa 96/98): ticket 35 zł standard, 25 zł reduced, 85 zł family, closed on Monday, about 45 minutes door to door. Aquapark Sopot (Zamkowa Góra 5): one hour 75 zł standard, 65 zł reduced, SKM to Sopot takes a quarter of an hour plus about 15 minutes on foot.

Which day is free where: a plan for a rainy week

Gdańsk museums have different free days and different closing days. Arranged around this calendar, three days in museums cost as much as one.

A sample arrangement: on Monday the Main Town, that is Amber, Town Hall, Artus Court and Uphagen House, all within 300 metres. On Tuesday the Museum of the Second World War in the morning, the National Museum in the afternoon. On Wednesday Ołowianka: the Crane, Sołdek and the Maritime Culture Centre. On a rainy Thursday that leaves Hevelianum, the Museum of Illusions and St Mary’s tower, which you pay for as normal.

Where to stay so that everything is close

All the places in points 1 to 4, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 13 are within a 20-minute walk of the Old Town and Długie Ogrody. Three apartments that fit such a plan well:

• JJ Gardens, Długie Ogrody, two bedrooms and a living room. A few steps to the Museum of Illusions, about 15 minutes to the Museum of the Second World War.
• U Furty, Old Town, two bedrooms and a living room. About 5 minutes to the Great Mill and the Amber Museum.
• Raven, Długie Ogrody, 38 m² for four people, a good option for a couple with a child for two nights.

What to do in Gdańsk with children when it rains?

Closest to the centre: the Museum of Illusions on Długie Ogrody (children under 3 free) and St Mary’s tower. For longer: Hevelianum on Gradowa Hill with interactive exhibitions, and the Loopy’s World play centre in Wrzeszcz for children from one year. For a whole day: the Experyment Science Centre in Gdynia or Aquapark Sopot, both by SKM train.

Is the Crane in Gdańsk open?

Yes. The Crane is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 17:00, on Wednesdays from 13:00 and free of charge that day. Only the interactive hall in the Maritime Culture Centre on Ołowianka is closed until 18 October 2026.

Will I see Memling’s “Last Judgement”?

Not this season. The painting is being conserved and, according to the National Museum in Gdańsk, returns to display only after the end of 2026. The rest of the collection on Toruńska is open, free on Tuesdays.

How much time to allow for the Museum of the Second World War?

The museum does not state a recommended time. Allow half a day and go in before noon, especially on Tuesday, when the museum closes at 16:00.

Is the Tourist Card worth it on a rainy weekend?

Do the sums: three paid entries for an adult, for example the Amber Museum 37 zł, the Museum of the Second World War 33 zł and Hevelianum 30 zł, come to 100 zł. The Explorer Card for 48 hours costs 85 zł. With two entries a day the card usually works out cheaper, with one it does not.
